Account of military service written by James Proudfit, a Madison, Wis. solider who served with the First and Twelfth Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. Included in the service account is participation in the Battle of Bull Run, duty guarding railroads, and participation in the Siege of Vicksburg. Also included is an account of the military service of General William Tecumseh Sherman that covers the various battles in which Sherman led troops such as in the Battle of Bull Run, Shiloh, and Chickamauga. Also included are two individual portraits of Proudfit in civilian dress.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
